(Jos Hayward, Frances Hammer, Jenni Casalaz & myself - Tickie Spencer)
through the Great Dane Club of Victoria Inc
We have managed to Rehomed the following Danes since January this year!!
If you know of a Danes that needs rescuing please do not hesitate - CONTACT ME!

Mordi was an entire girl, age unknown, found, in full season, running free along a main road bordering an industrial estate. The person who found her did a 'house to house' in the area without success. She contacted all the vets in a 15klm radius and also vets further away, but known to have a largish Dane clientele. All animal 'pounds' were contacted and given the dogs description but the 'finder' declined to surrender her - electing to keep her until her owner was found. The 'rehome' group also contacted known breeders and other Dane club members in the area where the dog was found. 'Dane' people in business in the area, put her photo and some general information in their window.
After several weeks without any body claiming her or making any enquiries, she was rehomed with a family in the Dandenong's who had contacted Danedreamer wanting buy a pup, but were only to happy to give her a good home….. She had NO microchip.

Pepe

 Pepe, an 18 month old entire dog, was owned by people who rented in Lorne, who subsequently moved to Mexico. Prior to leaving the original owners rehomed Pepe on a rural property outside Lorne. The 16 year old son of the people who owned the rental property, went to visit Pepe in his new environment and was horrified by Pepe's condition and how he was being kept - he returned home and asked his parents to do something about the situation. The parents spoke to the people who had rehomed Pepe and ended up taking him home. Unfortunately these people, who had the best of intentions, did not have any fences, so Pepe was on a running chain when he was outside. The people realised this was not satisfactory and contacted the GDCV. After asking them to contact the original owners to give permission for the Dane Club to rehome him and for him to be neutered, Pepe was rehomed in Victoria.
Bella was in the Ballarat RSPCA and was due to be Euthanized. Jos rang the RSPCA and asked for a delay to enable her to get to Ballarat to see her, the request was denied. Jos the rang the RSPCA headquarters and was subsequently told they would hold her for 2 more days if she would guarantee to get there in that time. Jos subsequently purchased Bella and took her home. Bella was rehomed in Sydney, thanks to the network we have going, with the owners having a holiday home in QLD, she will travel with them when they holiday…. Quite a turn around for this girl.

Zedd

 Zedd, a young entire fawn male was surrended by his very elderly owner to the Lort Smith Dog |Home. Zedd was NOT micro-chipped but Jenni was able to locate his breeder in QLD and contacted her to inform her of Zedd's situation, we secured the dog at Lort Smith by giving credit card details, and passed his details on to 6 different couples wishing to take a rescue, Zedd was sent by the Lort Smith for some training and was rehomed with a couple in Victoria.
Gracie, a 2 yo fawn female, taken in by a GDCV member after people who had rehoused her only months previously were having problems between Gracie and their other dog.
Gracie was found to be malnourished, covered in fleas and was spending most of her time locked in a tin garage, we found her to be good with the members other dogs, good with children, possibly just a bit too interested in the cats.
Gracie was micro-chipped and we were able to contact the original owners who had surrendered her reluctantly - but as the owner found herself pregnant with twins, giving her 5 children under 5, felt Gracie deserved better. This lady confirmed Gracies temperament and was able to arrange to change the microchip details. Gracie was rehomed through the E&CGDC to Sydney, she was road transported to her new home and the owners are delighted with her and she has a handsome Black male Dane to keep her company that this couple has rescued previously.

I was contacted by Marie E&CRGDC about a black boy in The RSPCA Central Coast, Monsta, I had a young lady Naomi on my books so she contacted them, there were a few conditions but they decided she could have Monsta, Noami was really looking forward to getting this boy and once again GTE Transport bought him down to Victoria.. Ada, a 16 week brindle girl whose owners decided they were unable to keep her, contacted the GDCV. When asked about returning her to her breeder they advised that they had purchased her from a pet shop!!!!! I offered to come and pick her up, Jos had kindly offered to house her but declined, saying they would keep her until we had an owner for her. They were advised we didn't have anyone wanting to take a 16 week puppy at present. The owners then rang several times in the next few days asking if we had anyone yet and how long would it take as they needed her gone. They were given the details of 'Save a Dog' where the subsequently too the pup, who was adopted the following day.
I received and email that a male, very tall Dane in need was in a country pound Mildura area. He is being cared for by the ranger and he is rehabilitating him by feeding him decent food slowly as he was starved. He has improved and been there about 3-4 weeks. I had a lovely girl who had been on my books waiting for a Dane for a while, I put her in contact with the Ranger who had been caring for this boy and the sad news came back that after being so badly starved and neglected in the vet's opinion he was past help, very sad for all concerned.

" I had a call from Julie Ruddle today telling me that someone has phoned her to tell her about a GD bitch in Hawkesbury Pound, who will be put down on 3rd May, if not taken. I'm away at the moment and won't be back home to beautiful broadband until tomorrow afternoon - letting you know that because I have tried to download the Hawkesbury page but it just takes hours and I've given up. If you have anyone waiting they might be interested - she apparently has a beaut temperament, is between 4 - 5 years old they think but that is all the info they have.
I contacted Jan in Seaford Victoria, who was on my books wanting a female I supplied her with contact details to Hawksbury pound and a link to a photo of this girl and the road transport details, this girl is now happy and rehomed in Victoria.
This Fawn girl had been abandoned with a car on the side of an outback road, she was transported down to Melbourne by GTE Dog transport...Jenni

I received a phone call from Ann Paul a dear friend in Queensland, Carol Blyth had rang Julie Ruddle who had told Ann, who rang me, isn't this typical of the Dane world, but NO gossip or backstabbing with these fine ladies, they wanted to let me know there was a Dane desperately in need of a home the advertisement read as below:-
"Before I give him up the reason for this is due to a relationship break up and I simply just can't afford to feed him due to trying to renovate my home and feeding my children, but I want him to go to a decent home !!!!! You need to know he is more of a ladies dog but will take to men once he gets to know them and expects to play! He is 3 years old desexed, does get along with female dogs but not male ones, and doesn't like cats nor any other small creature he tends to eat them, he's very gentle when it comes to children, I have a 4 yr old daughter and she goes into his pen all the time. He is house trained but he thinks he can sleep with you and being such a big dog he takes up all the room but you can spoon with him LOL look I am really reluctant to get rid of him but I just can't afford to keep him so PLEASE TO A GOOD HOME ONLY ! "

This lady who owned Jed lived in St Arnaurd, Victoria, a 10 hour round trip for me, So off I went, I picked up another dear friend Fran and the new to be owner, who lived just around the corner, thanks to my hubby for loaning me his wagon for the day. Oh and the fuel card (Very important)....thanks honey, I love you....we drove out and picked this boy up, he was thin, but had been cared for, the owner had just come onto some hard times. Down side to the trip was a stop at the comfort station in Maldon I lost a beautiful Sapphire and diamond ring...Ouch. Mandy and Jed were delivered home and Franny was dropped off, I got home at 6.30pm....Jed is settling in well Mandy has taken a week off work to settle him in.  I was contacted through my webpage by Dr Penny in Melbourne looking for a rescue Dane at the same time Marie Jennison from the Eastern and Coastal Region Great Dane Club had Penny's Daughter Susan a third year Vet. Science student at Sydney University also contact me, I put them both in contact with a Merle girl Xena who was in the RSPCA Pearcedale shelter I gave them the contact details and they went down that morning and picked her up. Dr Penny rang me that night and I was pleased to hear that she had in fact adopted Xena, but that afternoon when Penny got Xena home she became unwell, she was very quickly rushed to the vet's where she died, she was in poor condition when handed in and her heart was weak, so Penny was actually ringing me up extremely distressed by the experience and wanted me to find her a Dane as soon as possible. I just had a phone call a couple of hours previously from a friend in NSW a Mantle Merle girl 11 months old (Tasha) had been bought back to her as her owners circumstances had changed and they could no longer care for her, Penny's daughter Susan went out to look at Tasha in Sydney and Penny drove from Melbourne to Sydney that next weekend to pick Tasha up, Penny has had Tasha down to the leash free park where she loves to socialize with all the other dogs and is now Penny's constant companion.
Marie Jennison - Eastern & Coastal Region GDC contacted me about Ludwig, his owners in NSW had split up and moved back to the city leaving this lighlty marked Harl boy in need of a loving home, Ludwig was well know for his work in advertising in NSW, extremely well trained, once again GTE Transport bought this boy down to Melbourne and he now resides in Warburton.....Jenni

Jos and Fran were contacted by a lady in Ballarat, her friends had owned Daisy a Mantle girl, desexed, good with kids, very thin and not being feed or looked after properly by her friends so she had taken her in. I had an American lady on my books who had owned Danes in the States, I rang her on her mobile to find her in Adelaide for the weekend, she flew back to Avalon, drove out to Ballarat and picked Daisy up, she now has a wonderful life with Gayle and family.

Oscar's owners came to us through the VGDC, he was in Victoria (Geelong area) he is 2.5 years old, Black desexed male who had done puppy school and basic training, listens when he wants to, stubborn, can be assertive and protective, always been an outside Dane and his owners wanted a good home for him because he was being left for long hours by himself. I had a lovely lady in Cranbourne who wanted a Dane for a constant companion, Vet nurse and been trained in advanced obedience as apart of her profession and ran a business from home. Julie emailed me to advise me she had visited Oscar on Saturday night and she had bought him home, she reported he was very well trained and was by her side all the time. What his previous owners were reporting in "stubborn and assertive" (mouthing) was just him wanting to play. He loves his new home on 20 acres, is not worried about the horses, he is slowly being introduced to the other pets and family members "he will love his life of companionship and space".....Jenni

 Tickie was contacted By Rosie, Dora's owner had injured his back and was unable to look after her anymore, we where able to contact her breeders and they have taken her back.

Lucinda was recommended to contact me about rescue Danes and lived in Colac. A couple of days later I had a quick phone call from Fran to advise me a friend with a different breed of dog had been to the Geelong Animal Welfare Centre and they had noticed a Merle girl there, Sasha had been handed into the shelter because her owner had a stroke and was no longer able to look after her, a quick email and phone call to Lucinda and she went down to the shelter to view Sasha. She was very happy with her and arranged to pick her up after the usual check up and vaccinations. Lucinda has reported back she is well trained, loves going for walks and she is very happy, she will contact the Animal Shelter as she would like her previous owners to know that she's found a home and she is happy and loved........Jenni
